Bellows School, Historic educational building in Franklinton, Columbus, United States
Bellows School is an educational building in Franklinton featuring Renaissance Revival style with a limestone foundation and intricately carved sandstone entrance. The structure displays Neoclassical decorative elements throughout, creating its distinctive architectural character.
The school was designed by architect David Riebel in 1905 and originally served students in its 13 classrooms across the surrounding neighborhood. It functioned as an active educational center until its closure in 1977.
The building carries the name of George Bellows Senior, father of the renowned artist George Bellows who helped shape the Ash Can School movement. This naming connects the school to an important chapter in American art history.
The building sits on Bellows Avenue between Town Street and Greenlawn Avenue, making it straightforward to locate in the Franklinton neighborhood. Note that it is no longer in active use, so exterior viewing is the most practical option for visitors.
The building received recognition from the Ohio Historic Preservation Office as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. This recognition sparked important conversations about protecting and preserving the structure for future generations.
