Saint Kevin's Way, Pilgrimage route in Ireland
Saint Kevin's Way is a walking path covering about 30 kilometers through County Wicklow's landscape, running from the village of Hollywood to the ancient monastery at Glendalough. The route winds through forests, across open hillsides, and over mountain passes, linking different types of terrain into a continuous journey.
The path follows an ancient route used by monks and pilgrims over one thousand years ago to reach the monastery of Saint Kevin. Kevin established a small community by the lakes of Glendalough in the 7th century, where he lived and prayed in a small cell.
The route carries the name of Saint Kevin and connects walkers with a living Christian tradition that continues to draw people today. Along the path, visitors encounter ancient churches and crosses that show how central this place was to faith and monastic life.
The path is well marked with yellow and black signs and takes about six to ten hours to complete the full route. Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are important, as mountain conditions can change quickly and rain is common.
A famous story tells that while Kevin prayed, a bird landed on his hand and built a nest with eggs there. Kevin remained still until the bird had raised its young, showing his deep respect for nature.
