Las Grietas, Natural pool in Bella Vista, Ecuador
Las Grietas is a series of three connected pools nestled between volcanic rock walls with emerald green water fed by a combination of saltwater and freshwater sources. These natural basins were formed by cracks in the volcanic rock and create a layered swimming environment.
The cracks were created through volcanic activity and erosion that shaped the Galapagos islands over millions of years. These geological processes built the landscape that exists today.
Swimmers and snorkelers use these pools to observe fish and marine creatures in the clear water. The site draws both residents and visitors who spend time here to cool off and explore the underwater life.
Visitors take a water taxi from Puerto Ayora to Finch Bay and then walk about 20 minutes through mangrove paths to reach the pools. Wear water shoes or sandals with good grip since the paths can be wet and slippery.
The water reaches depths of 10 meters in some areas, creating a habitat where brown pelicans and lava lizards regularly visit the surrounding rocks. These animals are part of the rare wildlife that exists only on the Galapagos islands.
