Alcedo Volcano

The Alcedo Volcano reaches 1,130 meters in height and contains a substantial caldera measuring 6.1 by 7.4 kilometers on Isabela Island.

The volcano emerged from the Pacific Ocean approximately 313,000 years ago and experienced its most recent documented eruption in 1993, discovered two years later.

Scientists and researchers frequent this location to study its geological formations and monitor the largest population of wild Galapagos tortoises in the archipelago.

Access to the volcano requires guidance from certified naturalist guides and permits from the Galapagos National Park authorities for environmental protection purposes.

Unlike other Galapagos volcanoes, Alcedo has produced both rhyolite and basaltic lava, creating distinct geological formations and color variations in its structure.
