Alcedo Volcano, Shield volcano in Isabela Island, Ecuador

Alcedo Volcano is a shield volcano on Isabela Island characterized by a broad, gently sloping profile and a large caldera at its summit. The crater floor and surrounding slopes display exposed lava formations and varied rock types from different geological periods.

The volcano formed hundreds of thousands of years ago through submarine volcanic activity. Its last documented eruption occurred in the 1990s and was discovered during a later survey.

The volcano is home to the largest wild population of Galapagos giant tortoises, which roam freely across its slopes and crater floor. Visitors can observe these ancient creatures in their natural habitat while walking through the landscape.

The climb is challenging and requires good physical fitness along with a certified naturalist guide who knows the trails and regulations. Starting early in the day helps you complete the ascent before afternoon heat becomes intense.

This volcano stands apart from others in the Galapagos because it erupted with multiple types of lava, creating visible color contrasts in the rock layers. The geological variety visible here is less common than at other nearby volcanic sites.
