1889 Enoteca
The 1889 Enoteca is an Italian restaurant in Woolloongabba that focuses on Roman dishes. The space has red banquettes and timber tables paired with exposed brick and marble, creating a warm setting, while the menu offers a small selection of carefully chosen dishes including antipasti, pasta, main courses, and desserts.
The building was constructed in 1889 as the Moreton Rubber Works and originally served as a factory. Owners Dan Clark and Manny Sakellarakis purchased the property, invested two years in restoration, and opened the restaurant in 2008.
The restaurant occupies a heritage building and keeps Roman dining traditions alive in Brisbane. The name enoteca comes from Italian and refers to a wine library, and this tradition shows in how guests gather here to share meals and explore wines together.
The restaurant offers seating indoors and on a patio, with the outdoor area particularly popular in summer. A basement wine cellar accommodates events for up to 40 people, and takeaway service is available on select evenings and weekend lunches.
During restoration, owners discovered old newspapers from the 1950s hidden under the carpets, revealing the building's long past. A recipe from the restaurant was later featured in The Broadsheet Italian Cookbook, allowing guests to recreate dishes at home.
