Ranakpur Temple, Jain temple in Desuri Tehsil, India
Ranakpur Temple is a Jain sanctuary in the Aravalli hills with 1,444 marble pillars spread across multiple levels and courtyards. The structure spans a large area with elaborate carvings adorning ceilings, walls, and every structural element.
Construction began in the 15th century under merchant Dhanna Shah with support from Rana Kumbha, the Mewar ruler. The project spanned several decades and became one of the major religious structures of that era in the region.
The main temple honors Lord Adinath, the first Jain Tirthankara, whose statue serves as the center of devotion for visiting pilgrims. You can observe how worshippers move through the sacred space and pause at the intricately carved sections throughout the complex.
The temple sits roughly 90 kilometers from Udaipur and is reached by road or through nearby railway stations. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore the sprawling complex and its various sections.
Each of the 1,444 marble pillars features different carved patterns, meaning no two pillars are alike throughout the complex. This variety in designs makes walking through the temple a journey of discovery across different artistic styles.
