Chongoni Rock Art Area, Archaeological site in Central Region, Malawi
The Chongoni Rock Art Area contains 127 different sites with paintings spread across 126.4 square kilometers of forested hills on the Malawi plateau.
The Late Stone Age BaTwa hunter-gatherers created red paintings, while Iron Age Chewa farmers introduced white clay artwork during the first millennium AD.
Women of the Chewa clan produced numerous rock paintings representing ceremonies and rituals that document their traditions and social practices.
Located 15 kilometers from Dedza, the highest town in Malawi, visitors can explore multiple rock art locations through guided tours in the forest reserve.
The area represents the densest concentration of rock art sites in Central Africa, featuring both red and white paintings from different cultural groups.
