Miradouro dos Três Castelos, Clifftop viewpoint in Portimão, Portugal.
Miradouro dos Três Castelos is a clifftop viewpoint in Portimão, overlooking the Atlantic and the beach directly below, named after three large rock formations that rise from the water. The site runs along the edge of the cliff, offering open views from several spots as you walk along the top.
The area around the viewpoint was long used by local fishermen before Portimão grew into a tourist destination during the 20th century. As the Algarve coast attracted more visitors, the site was gradually made more accessible to the public.
From the viewpoint, you can watch fishermen casting their lines near the rocks below, a daily practice that has long been part of life along this stretch of coast. Their boats and gear are often visible from above, giving a direct sense of how the sea is still used here.
The viewpoint is reached from Avenida Tomás Cabreira, where parking is available and a staircase leads down to the beach below. The ground near the cliff edge can be uneven and slippery when wet, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
At low tide, natural tunnels through the cliff base connect Três Castelos beach to the neighboring Praia da Rocha. These openings are only accessible when the water is low and are almost invisible from the viewpoint above.
