Tagore Park, Park in Mangaluru, India
Tagore Park, also known as Light House Hill Garden, is a small public park situated on a hill in central Mangaluru. From its elevated position, visitors can look out over the sea and watch boats passing in the distance.
A small lighthouse inside the park was built in 1900 and remains one of the oldest structures on the hill. The surrounding green space was gradually shaped into a public garden over the following decades.
The park is named after Rabindranath Tagore, one of India's most celebrated poets. Locals and visitors alike seem to feel the connection between his reflective spirit and the way people naturally slow down here.
The park opens in the morning and again in the late afternoon, closing for a few hours around midday, so it is worth planning your visit around those hours. There are steps throughout the grounds, which may make it harder to get around for some visitors.
The lighthouse inside the park stands about 33 feet (10 meters) tall, which is quite modest for a working lighthouse, yet it guided ships along this stretch of coast for many years. It is no longer in active use but still draws the eye when you walk through the grounds.
