Labské pískovce Protected Landscape Area

The Landschaftsschutzpark Elbsandsteingebirge is a nature reserve featuring sandstone rock formations, deep gorges, and dense forests in the Ústecký region. The landscape stretches along the Elbe River and combines exposed cliffs, wooded slopes, and river valleys into one interconnected terrain.

The area was established as a protected landscape in 1972 to preserve its geological formations. These sandstone structures were created millions of years ago during the Cretaceous period, when an ancient sea covered the region.

The sandstone region reflects centuries of human interaction through traditional forest management practices and sustainable agricultural methods in surrounding communities.

The area offers numerous marked hiking trails suitable for different ability levels. Information centers throughout the region provide maps and guidance about local plants and wildlife to help visitors navigate.

The protected area contains distinct microclimates within its gorges and plateaus that support specialized plant species. These organisms have adapted to varying temperature and moisture conditions, making specific sections botanically remarkable.
