Lužické hory Protected Landscape Area, Protected landscape area in Liberecký kraj, Czech Republic

The Lausitzer Gebirge Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Lužické hory) covers 271 km² in northern Bohemia, spanning the Děčín, Česká Lípa and Liberec districts. Its elevation runs from 289 to 793 metres, the highest point being the summit of Luž. It protects sandstone rock towns together with phonolite, trachyte and basalt cones, topped by remnants of beech, fir, maple, elm and oak woodland.

The Ministry of Culture established the protected area by decree on 19 March 1976, effective 12 April 1976, covering 265 km² in the Děčín, Česká Lípa and Liberec districts. Its administration first sat in Děčín, moving to Jablonné v Podještědí on 1 January 1979. In 1991 the administration was transferred to the Czech Institute for Nature Conservation, and in October that year it relocated to Nový Bor with eight staff.

The area's German name, Lausitzer Gebirge, and the Czech Lužické hory both refer to the Lužice region; across the border the same range is called Zittauer Gebirge. The Köglerova naučná stezka, named after a local forester, is the oldest marked nature trail in the Czech Republic. The international trail linking the Lužické and Žitavské hory has 27 stops with panels on geology and nature.

Spring and autumn offer the best visiting conditions, with mild weather and well-maintained paths for walking. Access comes from several entry points near small towns, and visiting the administrative office in Jablonné v Podještědí helps with orientation and local information.

The area was declared by a Ministry of Culture decree on 19 March 1976, effective 12 April 1976, initially covering 265 km² with five state nature reserves, one protected site and three protected natural formations. Its administration sat in Děčín until 1 January 1979, when it moved to Jablonné v Podještědí.
