Aldrich Coal Mine Museum

The Aldrich Coal Mine Museum displays mining equipment, photographs, and documents from the coal extraction period in Montevallo. The collection spans two historic buildings and shows how this industry shaped the region.

The museum grew from the heritage of coal mines that powered Montevallo's economy through the early 1900s. Farrington Hall, one of the two main buildings, was built in 1908 for William Aldrich and stands as a monument to that era.

The place preserves memories of mining communities through stories and objects shared by people who lived and worked in the area. These personal accounts show what daily life looked like in a coal town and what mattered to residents.

Visitors can participate in guided tours and educational programs that require advance reservations. It helps to call ahead since hours are limited and groups may need special arrangements.

The site is home to Alabama's only monument dedicated to coal miners, erected in 1997 to honor the workers who extracted coal under difficult conditions. This memorial stands as a unique tribute to their contributions in the state.
