Lynch Family Skatepark, Skatepark under Zakim Bridge in Cambridge, United States
The Lynch Family Skatepark sits beneath the Zakim Bridge in Cambridge and features bowls, ramps, rails, and platforms for skating and BMX riding. The facility includes both flowing sections and street-style obstacles spread across a large concrete surface.
Nancy Schon started this project in 2000 after recognizing that skateboarders lacked a dedicated space in the area. Her work with the Charles River Conservancy made the development of this facility possible.
This facility references notable locations from Boston's skateboarding past through its design, creating connections that skaters notice as they move through the space. The layout celebrates the local scene's roots while serving today's riders.
The skatepark opens early in the morning and stays open into the evening hours, with lights installed to allow riding after dark. The location under the bridge provides clear shelter and easy navigation once you arrive.
The facility was built directly beneath an interstate highway structure, making the bridge itself part of the skating experience. This unusual placement creates a distinctive urban environment where riders practice under the overhead presence of the road.
