Cleveland West Pierhead Light
Cleveland West Pierhead Light, Lighthouse at Cleveland Harbor entrance, United States.
The Cleveland West Pierhead Light is a lighthouse at Cleveland Harbor's entrance with a tapered steel tower about 20 meters tall. An adjacent fog signal building complements the main structure to help guide ships through the waterway.
The lighthouse was built in 1884 to guide ships safely into Cleveland Harbor. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, securing its protection as a historic site.
This light marks an important chapter in how Lake Erie shaped Cleveland's growth as a port city. It shows visitors the deep connection between the harbor and the city's maritime past.
The lighthouse sits on a harbor pier and is best viewed from the water or nearby waterfront paths. Visitors should know that access may be limited and the location is exposed to wind and weather.
The cast iron construction allows the lighthouse to withstand the lake's harsh winter conditions, including severe ice buildup. This sturdy design has proven itself across more than a century of service.
