Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre is a rehabilitation facility for displaced Asian elephants located within the Krau Wildlife Reserve. It provides medical care, recovery treatment, and preparation for these animals to return to or relocate within protected environments.
The relocation operations began in 1974 as a response to conflicts between wild elephants and expanding human settlements. In 1989, the government established this permanent facility to expand and formalize these rescue and relocation efforts.
Local mahouts practice traditional elephant care techniques passed down through generations, shaping daily routines at the center. These methods reflect how knowledge and skill are preserved in the region's relationship with these animals.
The center is located approximately two hours southeast of Kuala Lumpur via the East Coast Expressway, exiting at Lanchang. It is advisable to confirm visiting hours beforehand, as access to certain areas requires advance registration or organized tours.
The facility employs trained elephants from neighboring Thailand and Myanmar that serve as mentors to newly arrived animals. These experienced individuals help calm frightened elephants and prepare them for their eventual move to protected territory.
