Minden Barracks, Military fort in George Town, Malaysia
Minden Barracks is a former British military installation spread across several colonial-era buildings and parade grounds. The complex now houses the main campus of Universiti Sains Malaysia within the Gelugor district.
The site began as Glugor House plantation before becoming a military barracks in 1939. It served British forces until 1971 and experienced Japanese occupation during World War II.
The name comes from a 18th-century European battle, linking Malaysian military heritage to events far from home. The original colonial buildings remain visible and are woven into the university campus today.
The site now operates as an active university campus, so visitor access may be restricted to certain areas. Several original military-era buildings remain visible and some have been preserved while being integrated into campus facilities.
The British Army ran a children's school within the barracks equipped with its own swimming pool, operating annually until 1971. This facility was unusual for a Southeast Asian military installation and served families stationed there.
