El Chinchorro, Peruvian-owned estate in Arica y Parinacota Region, Chile
El Chinchorro is an estate located in the Arica y Parinacota Region on Chile's northern coast, spanning about 14 hectares across the landscape. The Pan-American Highway divides the property into two distinct areas.
The property was purchased by the Peruvian government in 1926 to house residents from Tacna who chose to remain in Arica following the Pacific War. This acquisition reflected the border adjustments made between the two nations after that conflict.
The estate takes its name from the Chinchorro people, ancient fishermen who once lived along this desert coast. Visitors can sense the historical connection to these early inhabitants through the land itself.
The grounds have been completely fenced since 1996 and can only be viewed from the outside. Visitors should explore the surroundings respectfully and observe the property boundaries.
The Peruvian government has plans to develop a cultural complex on the grounds that would include a consular office and museum. This future project could transform the location into a major center for learning about the Chinchorro culture.
