Chequiaraju, Mountain summit in Cordillera Blanca, Peru
Chequiaraju is a summit in the Cordillera Blanca rising to about 5,286 meters, with steep faces covered in snow and ice. The glaciers on its flanks form complex patterns and crevasses that make the terrain demanding for technical climbers.
Polish climbers reached the summit first in 1952, opening the era of regular expeditions to the peak. Since then the mountain has become a known destination for climbing expeditions from around the world.
The name comes from Quechua words describing natural elements, showing how indigenous languages remain part of life in the Ancash region. This connection appears throughout the area in place names and in stories local people still share.
The base camp is best reached from Huaraz city, where mountain guides, equipment rentals, and official permits are available. Conditions vary with weather and season, so it helps to check before planning your trip.
Each face of the mountain offers different climbing routes with varying difficulty levels and techniques. The western ridge connects to a nearby peak, allowing experienced climbers to explore multiple routes in a single expedition.
