Cristo de Yungay, Memorial statue in Yungay, Peru
The Cristo de Yungay stands 60 feet high on cemetery hill, extending its arms toward Mount Huascaran from a circular platform structure.
The statue was constructed between 1965 and 1966 above the cemetery designed by Swiss architect Arnoldo Ruska, who completed the original grounds in 1903.
The monument serves as a memorial symbol following the 1970 avalanche that affected the original town of Yungay and its inhabitants.
Visitors can reach the statue by following marked paths up cemetery hill, with the site remaining open during daylight hours throughout the year.
The concrete structure weighs 9 tons, with each hand weighing 46 kilograms and both arms measuring two tons each.
