Chacas, Mountain city in Asunción Province, Peru
Chacas is a city set at about 3,359 meters (11,000 feet) elevation in the Conchucos region of Asunción Province, nestled among mountains and river valleys. The town sits in a dramatic landscape where peaks surround a settled area with basic services and colonial architecture.
The settlement was founded in 1572 as San Martín de Chacas on top of much older pre-Hispanic sites that show evidence of Chavin and later Huari occupation. Spanish colonial authorities chose this location to establish administrative control over the mountain communities.
Woodworking and stained glass crafts form a living part of community life here, with local artisans continuing traditions passed down through generations. You can observe these craftspeople at work in their studios throughout the town.
Getting here by car from Huaraz takes about three hours along a mountain road that requires careful driving in some sections. The dry season offers more reliable road conditions and clearer weather for traveling through the high-altitude terrain.
The local museum holds over 400 artifacts from pre-Hispanic cultures, revealing the rich human history buried across these mountains. The surrounding landscape contains roughly a hundred additional archaeological sites, showing how heavily populated this region once was.
