Cayma District

Cayma is an administrative district in Arequipa Province that spreads across mountainous terrain in the Andes. The region divides into lower and upper sections, with the lower area serving as a center for banking and commerce.

Dominican friars built a hermitage here in 1544, which later expanded into a full church structure. This religious building evolved over the centuries and continues to define the district's historical legacy.

The district took its name from a story about a statue of the Virgin intended for another city, which stopped here instead. This origin reflects the spiritual importance that has shaped community identity and local religious traditions over centuries.

Visitors should know that the district sits at high elevation and exploring different areas often requires walking. It helps to allow time for gradual acclimatization and preparation for the mountainous conditions.

The San Miguel Arcángel Church holds an important collection of paintings showing miracles connected to the Virgin Mary. This artistic heritage makes the church's interior a noteworthy example of colonial religious art and devotion.
