The Universe, Artificial archipelago project near Dubai coast, United Arab Emirates.
The Universe is an artificial archipelago project off Dubai's coast designed to form the shape of the Milky Way and Solar System across 16 kilometers. The development was planned to include residential areas and hotels laid out according to astronomical patterns.
Nakheel Properties announced the project in January 2008, with Dutch company Van Oord selected to create 3,000 hectares of new land through dredging. The ambitious development was planned to extend between existing coastal projects like Palm Jumeirah and The World.
The development intended to expand Dubai's architectural innovations by creating celestial-themed islands, representing the sun, moon, and various planets of the solar system.
The location sits between several other coastal developments along Dubai's shoreline and connects to these existing areas. Visitors should note that the development is in its early stages and many planned facilities remain under construction.
Construction plans for The Universe included residential areas and hotels arranged in astronomical patterns, reflecting celestial bodies visible from Earth.
