Ruwais, Industrial settlement in Western Region, United Arab Emirates
Ruwais is an industrial settlement in the western region of Abu Dhabi built to house workers and their families. It spreads across a large area with residential blocks, shops, schools, medical facilities, and places for recreation.
This place started as a small fishing village and transformed into an industrial center beginning in the 1970s. The oil refinery opened in 1982 and became the foundation for growth and development in the area.
The residents here come from many different countries and speak Arabic, English, and Hindi in their daily lives. This mix of people shapes how the settlement feels and functions day to day.
This settlement is located about 240 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi city and connects to it via the E11 highway. The drive takes several hours through flat desert landscape along the main road through the western region.
The site hosts specialized plants that process natural gas, produce fertilizers, and manufacture petrochemicals under international companies. These industrial operations are the reason the settlement was built and continue to define its purpose.
