Al Fahidi Fort, Historic fortification in Bur Dubai, UAE.
Al Fahidi Fort is a fortification in the Bur Dubai district, built from thick stone walls and plaster, with watchtowers at its corners and several buildings grouped around open courtyards. It now operates as the Dubai Museum, the oldest building still standing in the city.
The fort was built in 1787 to defend the settlement against attacks from the sea. Over the following centuries it changed roles several times, serving as an armory, a prison, and a residence for the ruling family before becoming a museum.
The rooms inside show how pearl divers and traders lived and worked along the creek before the city changed. Walking through them gives a concrete sense of daily life in a small port town that most visitors today never experienced firsthand.
Plan enough time to walk through all the levels, since the lower floor is easy to miss if you move quickly. The covered courtyards and indoor rooms provide shelter from the heat, making the visit comfortable even in summer.
The lower floor holds reconstructed market stalls with goods that traders sold roughly 70 years ago, alongside burial objects from much earlier periods. Many visitors walk past the entrance to this level without realizing it exists.
