This settlement began in the 14th century as a pearling and fishing community with over 2,500 residents who relocated to Abu Dhabi in 1968. That departure ended a long period of traditional coastal living in this location.
The buildings showcase merchant homes, a mosque, watchtowers, and a fort that reflect how people lived from maritime trade and fishing activities.
You can visit throughout the year, with morning hours offering the best light for photography and exploring the ruins. Comfortable shoes are important since you will walk over uneven ground between the abandoned buildings.
