Sharjah Fort, National museum and archaeological site in Heart of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
Sharjah Fort is a three-towered building in the city center with twelve gallery spaces inside. The galleries display weapons, documents, objects from daily life, and artwork that tell the story of the emirate's past.
The fort was built in 1823 as a defense structure and royal residence for the ruling family. In 1997 it became a public museum so people could learn about the emirate's history.
The fort is named after the Qawasim, a seafaring dynasty that once dominated the Gulf coast. Inside, exhibitions show how they lived, what they owned, and how they defended their territory.
The fort stands on Al Hisn Avenue in central Sharjah and is easy to reach on foot. Plan time to walk through all the galleries, and wear comfortable shoes since you will spend time standing and moving between rooms.
Traditional cannons sit at the fort's entrance, reminders of how it was defended long ago. Inside, a reconstructed prison cell lets visitors see what confinement looked like during those earlier times.
