Saint John the Baptist Church, Armenian Apostolic church in Kond district, Yerevan, Armenia
Saint John the Baptist Church is an Armenian Apostolic building with three interior aisles and a main altar positioned on the eastern end. The structure features an attached bell tower and interior flooring in marble, while exterior walls are covered in locally quarried tuff stone.
An earthquake in 1689 destroyed the medieval church that previously stood on this site, prompting the construction of the current building in 1710 with funding from Melik Aghamal. The structure underwent significant restoration work in the late twentieth century.
This place serves as a center for Armenian Apostolic worship and community gatherings in the neighborhood. Local residents use it as a spiritual focal point where religious traditions are actively practiced and celebrated.
The building is open for visitors during warm months, with indoor access available through the main entrance on the western side. Modest dress is recommended when entering, as this remains an active place of worship.
An educational center called Hovhannes Kozern is housed within the church complex and offers courses in ancient Armenian language and local history. This makes it a place where language and historical knowledge are actively preserved and taught.
