Yerevan Children's railway, park in Yerevan
Yerevan Children's railway is a miniature train line running through the Hrazdan Gorge park, traveling about 2.1 kilometers along a route that passes through a 45-meter tunnel and connects two main stations. Two small passenger cars move slowly and safely, offering views of the river and surrounding vegetation through gentle curves.
The idea for the railway was conceived in 1935 and construction began in 1936, with the original wooden station opening in June 1937. In the late 1940s, this wooden structure was replaced by a stone building designed by architect Gohar Grigoryan, giving the facility a more permanent form.
The railway stations carry names reflecting homeland and pioneer spirit, rooted in Soviet educational traditions where children learned about rail work and transportation. Families still gather here today, making it a place where generations experience their first train ride and adults enjoy time in nature.
The railway operates from May to October when warmer weather brings regular service, with busier schedules on weekends and holidays. Plan to arrive early for a better experience, and check ahead since timetables can change around special celebrations or seasonal adjustments.
The locomotive operating the railway is an original steam engine from 1937, received as a gift from a factory in Podolsk, and remains the oldest surviving locomotive in Armenia. This historic machine is carefully maintained and forms the heart of a place where railway and Soviet history are preserved.
