Mussulo, Peninsula in Luanda Province, Angola
Mussulo is a peninsula on the coast of Luanda Province, Angola, with one side facing a protected bay and the other facing the open Atlantic. The two shorelines look and feel quite different from each other, with calmer water on the bay side and rougher surf on the ocean side.
The peninsula was formed by sediment carried northward from the Cuanza River by the Benguela Current over a long period of time. This natural process gradually built up the narrow strip of land now visible from the coast.
Fishing and coastal living shape daily life here, with traditional practices visible in how people work and spend their time. The connection between residents and the sea remains strong and present throughout the peninsula.
Most restaurants and facilities are on the bay side, which also has calmer water for swimming. The road along the peninsula can get very busy on weekends, so going early in the day is a good idea.
Three small islands formed inside the bay on the sheltered side of the peninsula, and many visitors are not aware they exist. They are a natural byproduct of the same sediment process that created the peninsula itself.
