Prédio do Baleizão

The Prédio do Baleizão sits at Largo da Amizade Angola-Cuba square and displays architectural details from various periods of Angolan building practices. The structure blends design elements from different eras, reflecting the layered history of the site and its surroundings.

The building was constructed in the 17th century during early Portuguese colonization and later housed Dom João II College. These shifts in use demonstrate how the site transformed its function and importance over the centuries.

The building housed the Baleizão café, which became well-known among Luanda residents for its distinctive ice cream during the 1960s. This café represents how certain places become woven into the daily routines and memories of a city's people.

The building was closed in 2019 due to structural issues and is not accessible to visitors inside. The square itself remains a central point in Luanda where you can view the architecture from outside and understand the neighborhood's history.

The building received cultural heritage status through decree 86, formally recognizing its importance to the city's history. This designation underscores how preserving such structures matters for understanding Luanda's development.
