Kawésqar National Park

The protected area spans over 7 million acres of Magellanic rainforest, mountain ranges, fjords, channels, and estuaries in southern Patagonia.

The territory began its protection status as Alacalufes National Reserve in 1969 before becoming Kawésqar National Park through a government initiative in 2019.

The park bears the name of the Kawésqar people, indigenous canoe nomads who navigated these waters and lived in the region for seven thousand years.

Visitors need permits from CONAF to access the park, which receives substantial rainfall throughout the year and maintains an average temperature of 7 degrees Celsius.

The marine section contains a network of waterways where humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions, and black-browed albatrosses inhabit the protected waters.
