Spegazzini Glacier, Mountainous glacier in Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina
Spegazzini Glacier is a major glacier located in Los Glaciares National Park in Patagonia. It descends from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and creates an imposing wall of ice rising above Lake Argentino's water.
The glacier takes its name from Italian botanist Carlo Luigi Spegazzini, who studied Patagonian plant life in the late 1800s. His name reflects the scientific exploration that brought European researchers to this remote corner of South America.
The glacier stands as a natural border between Argentina and Chile, protected by both Los Glaciares and Bernardo O'Higgins National Parks.
The best way to reach this glacier is by boat from Puerto Bandera, which travels through the northern arm of Lake Argentino. Boats navigate around floating ice and icebergs before approaching the glacier wall.
Unlike many other large glaciers in the region, this one shows no signs of retreat despite climate changes affecting nearby ice fields. Its relative stability stands out as a rare exception in a landscape of shrinking glaciers.
