Yumbel is a city and administrative center in Bío Bío province, located in central Chile. It serves as the municipal hub for the surrounding commune and its resident population.
The city began when Governor Alonso de Sotomayor founded a fort in 1585, which gradually became a settlement. A major earthquake in 1835 destroyed much of it, but reconstruction led to its official recognition as a city in 1871.
