Oeno Island, Coral atoll in Pitcairn Islands, Great Britain.
Oeno Island is a coral atoll in the Pitcairn Islands with a circular shape and a central lagoon surrounded by shallow, clear water. The formation consists of several small islets covered in pandanus trees and palms, with white sand beaches forming the perimeter.
The island was discovered in 1819 by Captain James Henderson while commanding the ship Hercules for the British East India Company. It later became part of the Pitcairn Islands territory and has served the local population since then.
The Pitcairn islanders travel to Oeno each January for two weeks of recreation on its white sand beaches, setting up temporary camps.
Access to the island requires permission from the Pitcairn Island Council, and transportation must be arranged through private vessels since no regular ferry service exists. Visitors should know that crossing conditions depend on weather patterns and that planning ahead is essential due to limited transport options.
The atoll hosts one of the world's largest breeding colonies of Murphy's petrels, with thousands of pairs nesting in the vegetation. These rare seabirds make the location a significant spot for birdwatchers in the southern hemisphere.
