La Cisterna, Administrative commune in Santiago Province, Chile
La Cisterna is a residential commune in the southern part of Santiago Metropolitan Region, divided by the Vespucio Sur ring road. The area contains multiple neighborhoods connected by major avenues and local streets.
The commune was established in 1925 as an administrative unit through territorial division. It later lost territory in 1991 when the new communes of El Bosque and Lo Espejo were separated from it.
The municipal council manages local development through eight elected representatives and a mayor, reflecting the democratic structure of Chilean territorial administration.
Three metro stations along Gran Avenida – La Cisterna, El Parrón, and Lo Ovalle – connect this area to Santiago's public transportation network. Complementary tram and bus lines enhance accessibility throughout the region.
The territory maintains a population density of 9,012 inhabitants per square kilometer, with demographic statistics indicating an older average age than the Chilean national mean.
