Palacio Versailles, Contemporary art museum in Quinta Normal, Santiago, Chile.
Museo de Arte Contemporaneo is a museum with two locations in Santiago: MAC Parque Forestal and MAC Quinta Normal, both featuring rotating exhibitions of contemporary works throughout the year. The dual locations allow the institution to offer a diverse and constantly evolving program of contemporary art.
The Palacio Versailles was designed by architect Alberto Cruz Montt and built in 1918 as the headquarters of the Sociedad Nacional de Agricultura. In 1934 it passed to the University of Chile for its Faculty of Agronomy, which stayed until 1971. The Servicio de Salud Metropolitano Occidente then installed the Hospital San Juan de Dios outpatient clinic, and in 2005 remodeling fitted it out as the Quinta Normal seat of the Museum of Contemporary Art. It was declared a National Monument, Historic category, by decree 949 of 5 November 2004, under President Ricardo Lagos.
The museum displays works by Chilean and international artists that visitors encounter throughout the exhibition spaces. The pieces span from modern times to the present, reflecting diverse artistic expressions and creative approaches.
The Quinta Normal branch occupies the Palacio Versailles inside Quinta Normal Park, at the coordinates -33.44214, -70.68059, in the Quinta Normal district rather than Bellas Artes. The building has three levels: a base, a main floor and an upper floor, so expect stairs between exhibition rooms. The 2010 earthquake damaged the structure; it was restored in 2011 with funds donated by the German government.
The museum maintains a collection of audio files on an online platform documenting exhibitions, workshops, and cultural programs. This sound collection allows visitors to explore the museum's programs even after their visit.
