Huasco, Port city in Atacama Region, Chile
Huasco is a port city on the Pacific coast at the mouth of the Huasco River in the Atacama Region. The town spreads along the shoreline with traditional buildings, storage facilities, and infrastructure that supports shipping activities.
The town developed as a port with growing importance during the 1800s when shipping copper ore and alpaca wool to Wales around Cape Horn became the economic driver. This trade activity shaped the settlement's growth through the middle decades of the century.
The municipal governance system includes a council with an alcalde, representing local democratic traditions within Chile's administrative structure.
The city offers several small hotels and guesthouses for visitors along with various restaurants serving local dishes. Travelers can easily find basic services and explore the surrounding area on foot or by local transport.
From Huasco Bajo, a coastal path leads toward Llanos de Challe National Park where visitors encounter largely undisturbed beaches and dry landscapes. This route connects the historic port town to one of the region's lesser-visited protected areas.
