Suches River, Brook in La Paz Department, Bolivia.
The Suches River is a mountain brook in the La Paz Department that rises from Suches Lake and flows toward Lake Titicaca through the Bolivian-Peruvian highlands. It runs at very high elevation across open, treeless terrain and passes near a handful of small settlements along its course.
The river has long marked part of the border between Bolivia and Peru, and its course was formally recognized in boundary agreements following the conflicts of the 19th century. The line it traces between the two countries has remained largely unchanged since then.
The river forms a natural boundary between Bolivia and Peru and serves as a lifeline for communities that have long depended on its waters. People use it for daily activities and as a vital water source in this remote highland region.
The river is most easily reached from the small villages along its banks, which are accessible by unpaved roads. Elevation stays above 13,000 feet (4,000 m) throughout, so warm layers and time to acclimatize are strongly recommended.
Suches Lake, where the river begins, sits above 4,500 feet (4,500 m) and is one of the highest lakes in Bolivia to feed a permanent stream. The water that leaves this lake eventually joins Lake Titicaca, one of the largest high-altitude lakes on Earth.
