Verrugas Bridge, Steel truss bridge in Lima Department, Peru

Verrugas Bridge is a steel truss bridge spanning the Verrugas Canyon in the Peruvian Andes. It connects two mountain regions and allows trains to cross steep terrain that would otherwise be impassable.

The first structure was built in 1873, but two earlier versions collapsed before Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company completed this steel version in 1936. The project demonstrates how engineers adapted their techniques to handle extreme mountain conditions.

The bridge represents a significant advancement in Peruvian railway infrastructure, enabling the operation of the Callao, Lima & Oroya Railway through mountainous terrain.

The best views of the bridge come from vantage points on the road above and below the canyon, where you can see its full height and structure. Wear sturdy shoes, as the paths around the bridge are uneven and hilly.

Three bridges have stood at this location since 1873, making it an open-air testament to generations of engineering problem-solving. Hikers and train watchers see here how human determination meets one of the harshest landscapes in the Andes.
