Regional Conservation Area of System of Hills of Lima, Conservation area in Lima Department, Peru
The Regional Conservation Area of System of Hills of Lima protects approximately 13,475 hectares across five distinct zones within the desert landscape surrounding the city. The terrain features rolling hills that harbor adapted plants and animals in multiple sections throughout Lima Department.
The protection status was officially established on December 7, 2019, by Peru's Ministry of Environment following sustained efforts by conservation groups and residents to safeguard the hills. This declaration marked the formal recognition of the area's ecological importance.
Local women from surrounding communities develop and manage the Amancaes Hills Ecotourism Circuit, promoting environmental education and sustainable tourism practices.
The area can be accessed through multiple entry points distributed throughout the five zones, making exploration convenient from different parts of Lima Department. The cooler months offer the most favorable conditions for walking and observing plant life without harsh sun exposure.
The hills function as fog oases within the Sechura Desert, capturing moisture from coastal mists to sustain specialized plant communities in an otherwise dry environment. This moisture-capturing mechanism creates a rare natural phenomenon in one of South America's driest regions.
