Chancay Museum, Archaeological museum in Chancay District, Peru

The Chancay Museum is a three-level building near the main plaza that houses several thousand objects from pre-Columbian times. The collection includes ceramics, woven textiles, metalwork, and other artifacts that demonstrate the craftsmanship of the Chancay people.

The museum opened in 1991 and was first located inside Chancay Castle before moving to its current building near the main plaza in 2012. This relocation provided better conditions to display its extensive collection.

The museum displays everyday objects from the Chancay society, ranging from simple tools to elaborate ceramic vessels that reveal how people lived here centuries ago. These items allow visitors to understand the practical skills and artistic preferences of this ancient culture directly.

The building has elevators and interactive displays that are particularly helpful for children to learn about ancient history. It is wise to allow enough time for your visit, as the collection is quite extensive.

The museum preserves objects that were recovered from the Covadonga vessel, which sank in the Pacific during a regional conflict. This collection shows a rare connection between ancient times and more recent history in one place.
