Cathedral of Quito, Catholic cathedral in Historic Center, Ecuador

The Cathedral of Quito extends along the southern edge of Independence Plaza with three naves supported by square pillars and pointed arches.

The first provisional temple, built between 1562 and 1565 by Pedro Rodriguez de Aguayo, used adobe, wood, and straw for its construction.

The Cathedral houses numerous religious artworks, including paintings by Manuel de Samaniego and Bernardo Rodriguez, along with carved altarpieces by Quito School masters.

The Cathedral opens Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sundays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with different ticket options for museum and dome access.

An iron rooster stands atop one of the Cathedral's domes, becoming a distinguishing element of the structure and source of local narratives.
