Réserve provinciale de l'Auca Mahuida, Nature reserve in Neuquén Province, Argentina
Reserva Provincial Auca Mahuida is a nature reserve in Neuquén Province that spreads across basaltic plateaus and volcanic cones. The terrain rises from about 223 to 2,258 meters (732 to 7,408 feet) in elevation, creating varied landscapes.
The reserve gained its protected status in 1996 through provincial decree. In 1998, additional protection was added for its southern section to safeguard paleontological sites.
The Cerro de Las Brujas within the reserve displays rock art made by the Tehuelche people, featuring both paintings and carvings that record the presence of ancient inhabitants. These artworks show how people once lived in connection with this volcanic landscape.
The climate is temperate with average temperatures around 14 degrees Celsius and very low rainfall throughout the year. Visitors should prepare for dry conditions and elevation changes, since the terrain includes varied altitudes.
The area is home to fourteen plant species found nowhere else in the world. It also supports the region's largest guanaco population and serves as an eastern nesting site for Andean condors.
