Chilecito, Mountain city in La Rioja, Argentina
Chilecito is situated at 1080 meters elevation between the Sierra de Velazco and Sierra de Famatina mountain ranges in northwestern Argentina. The city occupies a valley surrounded by steep slopes that have historically connected trade routes between different regions.
The city was founded in 1715 by Spanish colonizers and grew as a mining center in the late 1800s. Construction of the La Mejicana cable car marked a turning point that transformed how minerals were transported from the mountains.
The Samay Huasi, once home to educator Joaquín V. González, functions today as an artistic retreat for the University of La Plata. The building attracts creators and thinkers interested in combining learning with the local landscape.
The city is walkable and has basic services for visitors scattered throughout the center. Museums and educational institutions are located within the main area, making it easy to explore on foot.
The famous La Mejicana cable car, which once transported ore down from mining areas, still has remaining structures visible across the surrounding mountains. These remnants tell the story of an industrial past that shaped the region's economy.
