Parque provincial Ibatín, Archaeological park in Monteros department, Argentina.
Parque Provincial Ibatín is an archaeological site containing the remains of a Spanish settlement arranged in a grid pattern on the ground. The area includes foundations of residential structures, public buildings, and religious structures that you can explore on foot.
The site was the original center of San Miguel de Tucumán, founded in 1565 before the city relocated around 120 years later. The abandoned foundations document the transition of this early Spanish presence in the region.
The ruins reveal how people lived and worked during Spanish settlement in this region. You can still see the foundations of houses, administrative buildings, and chapels that give a sense of daily life from that era.
The park sits roughly 70 kilometers southwest of San Miguel de Tucumán and can be reached via National Route 38 and Provincial Route 349. A vehicle is best for visiting since the site lies in a remote location away from other attractions.
The site is surrounded by native trees from the colonial period, including cedar and walnut trees, which preserve a natural setting around the ruins. This vegetation blends with the remains and evokes how the landscape looked when the settlement was still inhabited.
