Our Lady of Sorrows Church

Our Lady of Sorrows Church is a Catholic basilica in central Porto Alegre with a twin-tower facade and large iron gates at its entrance. The building opens into a grand staircase that leads to an interior filled with life-size statues and decorated wooden elements from different architectural periods.

Construction started in 1807, making this the oldest Catholic church still standing in Porto Alegre, with the first service held in 1812. Over the following decades, artistic elements from different movements were added to the building, showing how it grew alongside the city.

The interior displays Baroque woodwork mixed with neoclassical details that show how local craftsmen combined different styles over time. Walking through the space, visitors notice how these mixed elements tell the story of changing tastes in religious art and decoration.

Visit during daytime to see the architecture and interior details clearly, as the space relies on natural light. Check with the parish office about guided tours or quiet times for exploring, especially if you want to examine the artworks and decorations closely.

The facade contains niches with statues representing Faith, Hope, and Charity, designed by architect Júlio Weise in the early 1900s. These three figures often go unnoticed by visitors focused on the interior, yet they add a layer of moral meaning to the outside of the building.
