Palácio das Hortênsias, Governmental summer palace in Canela, Brazil
The Palácio das Hortênsias is a building featuring Portuguese architectural style, with stone walls and decorative details throughout its structure. The property spans 14 hectares of grounds surrounded by landscaped gardens.
Construction began in 1952 after World War II delayed the original 1939 plans for the building. Local residents and merchants supported its development and the subsequent relocation to Canela.
The palace functions as the summer residence of Rio Grande do Sul's governor and embodies the state's political role in the Serra Gaúcha region. You can see how this place reflects the connection between regional authority and local identity.
The palace is located on José Luiz Corrêa Pinto Avenue and offers parking facilities for visitors. The grounds are accessible and can be explored during favorable weather conditions.
The entire structure was carefully dismantled from its original location in Porto Alegre, with each stone numbered for reassembly. This elaborate relocation in 1981 allowed the building to be reconstructed at its new location in Canela.
