Museum of Natural Sciences

The Museum of Natural Sciences is a research and exhibition facility located within Porto Alegre's Botanical Garden, showcasing animal and plant collections along with fossils from the region. The displays are organized to show how different forms of life connect and evolve, from the tiniest organisms to the largest extinct creatures.

The museum was founded in 1955 after acquiring natural history collections that had been held at another institution in the city. This establishment allowed regional scientific treasures to be preserved and presented in a single dedicated place.

The exhibition layout follows an evolutionary sequence, starting with plant life and continuing through animal groups to paleontological discoveries of Rio Grande do Sul.

The museum is located inside a larger botanical garden, so visitors should allow time for orientation upon arrival. Comfortable shoes are recommended since visiting may involve walking through the garden grounds as well.

The exhibition includes more than 40 display cases showing different habitats of southern Brazil, from wetlands to forests. This arrangement lets visitors explore the region's varied landscapes in a single location.
