Nova Lima

Nova Lima is a municipality in Minas Gerais covering about 428 square kilometers in southeastern Brazil, positioned directly adjacent to the state capital Belo Horizonte and five neighboring municipalities. The terrain throughout the region is mountainous and varied.

The municipality received official status in 1891 after being known as Campos de Congonhas and then Congonhas de Sabará. These successive name changes reflect the region's evolving development and administrative history.

British miners arrived in the 1830s and established Anglican traditions that shaped the community's character. The influence of these early settlers remains visible in local customs and religious practices today.

The Morro Velho Mine reached depths of 2,590 meters and operated for 169 years until 2003, making it one of the world's deepest gold mines. At its peak, it produced about half of Brazil's annual gold output.
