Gruta Rei do Mato, Limestone cave formation in Sete Lagoas, Brazil
The cave system extends 998 meters underground, featuring four large chambers filled with numerous stalactites, stalagmites, and calcite formations throughout its passages.
Danish naturalist Peter W. Lund first explored the region in 1840, leading to scientific documentation of the cave's geological and paleontological characteristics.
Archaeological discoveries near the cave revealed ancient cave paintings dating back 4,000 to 6,000 years, along with skeletal remains of extinct Pleistocene mammals.
Located 70 kilometers from Belo Horizonte along highway BR-040, the cave offers guided tours through 220 meters of illuminated paths with modern visitor facilities.
The Rarities Hall contains twin calcite columns reaching heights of 13 meters, forming parallel structures through natural mineral deposition processes.
